Brakes

Brake pad wear sensor removed using screwdriver or lever.

  2. The sensor should be released by moving it from left to right and up and down until free of the brake caliper.

Front wiper arm loose, allowing wiper spindle to rotate without moving wiper arm.

  1. Remove wiper arm nut protective cover and remove nut.
  2. If wiper arm has come loose from spindle inspect affected components for damage. Replace components as necessary.
  3. Ensure wiper motor is in park position.
  4. Fit front wiper arm. Tighten wiper arm nut as follows:
  5. Freelander (97-06): 18 Nm.
  6. Freelander 2 (06-): 25 Nm.
  7. 90/110/130/Defender: 17 Nm.
  8. Discovery 3 (04-): 18 Nm.
  9. Range Rover (02-): 18 Nm.
  10. Range Rover Sport: 34 Nm.

Workshop terms used on this page

Definitions for the technical language used in these bulletins.

VIN
Vehicle identification number — 17 characters, found at the base of the windscreen and on the V5C logbook
Nm
Newton-metres — the standard unit for how tightly a bolt is done up
Trouble Codes
Standardised fault codes stored by the engine computer, read with a diagnostic tool
LH
Left-hand — the left side of the vehicle as you sit in it
RH
Right-hand — the right side of the vehicle as you sit in it
TC
Turbocharger — the exhaust-driven compressor that boosts engine power
TPMS
Tyre pressure monitoring system — warns if a tyre is under-inflated
AC/Heater
The heating and air-conditioning system
Actuator
A motor or solenoid that moves a mechanical part on command
Anti-Seize
Grease that stops mating parts (like a wheel on a hub) from corroding together
Caliper
The part that squeezes the brake pads onto the disc
Control Module
A computer that runs one of the car's systems (engine, gearbox, brakes, body, and so on)
Fault Memory
The list of stored trouble codes in a control module
Hub Spigot
The raised centre of the hub that locates the wheel
Intercooler
A radiator that cools the air coming out of the turbocharger before it enters the engine
Message Centre
The information display in the instrument panel that shows warning messages
Multifunction Control Module
The body computer that runs shared electrical functions (lights, wipers, locking, and so on)
Rear Differential Lock
A locker that forces both rear wheels to turn together for extra traction
Receiver/Drier
The air-conditioning filter/dryer that removes moisture from the refrigerant
Re-Program
Update the software on a control module using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool
Steering Angle Sensor
Tells the stability-control system which way the steering wheel is pointing
Alternator
The unit that charges the battery while the engine is running
Auxiliary Drive Belt
The belt that drives the alternator, water pump, steering pump or air-conditioning compressor
Calibration
Setting a sensor or module so its readings match the real world
Oil Seal
A rubber seal that keeps oil in and dirt out, typically around a rotating shaft
