Cause

Turbocharger (TC) hose between intercooler and engine collapsed internally.

Poor cold starting

Cause

One or more glow plugs faulty.

Repair

Check glow plugs, replace as necessary.

Coolant loss

Overview

Affects: All models.

Symptoms

Engine overheating.

Cause

Radiator partly blocked.

Cylinder head gasket leaking.

Repair steps

Pressure test cooling system.
Check for leaks.
Replace cylinder head gasket as necessary.
Check radiator, replace as necessary.

Electrical & ignition

Water/dirt ingress into crash sensor harness multi-plugs

Overview

Affects: Range Rover 1994-99: All models with SRS, VIN LH 647645→.

Cause

When the SRS sensor wiring connector disconnected water/dirt seal may become dislodged or lost.

Repair

Ensure seal is fitted in the wiring harness multi-plug.
Ensure pointsare aligned.

Alarm/immobilizer will not disarm when using remote control

Affects All models.

Cause

Loss of communication between key remote control and control module.

Repair

Re-synchronize key remote controls.

Battery discharged

Cause

Multifunction control module does not switch to sleep mode after alarm set.

Repair

Check multifunction control module and replace as necessary.

Faulty suspension adjustment main valve block.

Clutch & gearbox

Overview

Affects: All models with AT, VIN 321292-323491.

Cause

Oil cooler sprayed with wax during production.

Incorrect LH front fog lamp blanking cover fitted.

Repair steps

Ensure no wax covering oil cooler.
De-wax if necessary.
Ensure LH front fog lamp blanking cover is a mesh type.

Poor performance or failure of AC system

Overview

Affects: All models.

Cause

Outside air temperature sensor faulty.

AC refrigerant pressure switch faulty.

AC compressor clutch sticking intermittently.

Repair steps

Check outside air temperature sensor and replace as necessary.
Check AC refrigerant pressure switch and replace as necessary.
Check AC compressor clutch and replace as necessary.

Air conditioning & heating

LH: Left-hand — the left side of the vehicle as you sit in it
SRS: Supplementary restraint system — the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners
TC: Turbocharger — the exhaust-driven compressor that boosts engine power
AC/Heater: The heating and air-conditioning system
Anti-Seize: Grease that stops mating parts (like a wheel on a hub) from corroding together
Compressor Pump: The pump that pressurises the air-suspension system
Control Module: A control unit for one of the vehicle's systems (engine, gearbox, brakes, body, and so on)
Glow Plugs: Heaters that help a diesel engine start from cold
Hub Spigot: The raised centre of the hub that locates the wheel
In-Car Temperature: The cabin-temperature sensor used by the climate control
Intercooler: A radiator that cools the air coming out of the turbocharger before it enters the engine
Multi-Plug: A multi-pin electrical connector on a wiring harness
Multifunction Control Module: The control module that runs shared electrical functions (lights, wipers, locking, and so on)
Refrigerant: The gas/liquid that carries heat in the air-conditioning system
Valve Block: The set of solenoid valves that directs air or fluid in the air-suspension or gearbox
Wiring Harness: The bundled cables that carry power and signals around the vehicle
Evaporator: The air-conditioning heat exchanger in the dashboard that cools the cabin air
Head Gasket: The seal between the cylinder head and the engine block
Intercooler Hose: The pipe that carries pressurised air between the turbocharger, intercooler and engine
Sleep Mode: The low-power state control modules enter when the car is parked; if one stays awake the battery can go flat
