Retractable door mirror micro-switch dislodged or faulty.

Symptoms

Retractable door mirrors fold in then immediately unfold.

Repair steps

  1. Remove door mirror cover.
  2. Ensure door mirror micro-switch fitted correctly.
  3. Check operation of retractable door mirrors.
  4. If fault still present: Replace retractable door mirror.

Repair

  1. Carry out electrical, mechanical and component tests (as applicable) to eliminate any other possible cause(s).
  2. If no fault(s) found: Re-program multifunction control module with modified software. Fit new rear window winder mechanisms.

Brakes

Front brake pad wear sensor body fractured on removal

Overview

Cause

Brake pad wear sensor removed using screwdriver or lever.

Repair

  1. The front brake pad wear sensor must only be removed by hand.
  2. The sensor should be released by moving it from left to right and up and down until free of the brake caliper.

Random operation of ABS when vehicle cornering

Steering angle sensor misaligned.

  1. Check front wheel alignment.
  2. Carry out steering angle sensor calibration using diagnostic equipment.
  3. Erase any stored trouble codes.

Squeal from rear brakes when braking

Poor manufacture of rear brake pads. Fix: fit a modified part.

Front wiper arm loose, allowing wiper spindle to rotate without moving wiper arm. Fix: adjust and tighten.

Front wipers not working.

Repair steps

  1. Remove wiper arm nut protective cover and remove nut.
  2. If wiper arm has come loose from spindle inspect affected components for damage. Replace components as necessary.
  3. Ensure wiper motor is in park position.
  4. Fit front wiper arm. Tighten wiper arm nut as follows:.
  5. Freelander (97-06): 18 Nm.
  6. Freelander 2 (06-): 25 Nm.
  7. 90/110/130/Defender: 17 Nm.
  8. Discovery 3 (04-): 18 Nm.
  9. Range Rover (02-): 18 Nm.
  10. Range Rover Sport: 34 Nm.

Abnormal tyre wear.

Stepped wear pattern on tyre edge.

  1. Rotate wheels and tyres every service.
  2. Rotate front LH to front RH and front RH to front LH.
  3. Rotate rear LH to rear RH and rear RH to rear LH.
  4. Check tyres for cuts, bulges or any other damage.

Cause

Crystallised brazing flux contamination in the receiver/drier causing a leak at the desiccant bag plug.

Newton-metres — the standard unit for how tightly a bolt is done up
Trouble Codes
Standardised fault codes stored by the engine control module, read with a diagnostic tool
LH
Left-hand — the left side of the vehicle as you sit in it
RH
Right-hand — the right side of the vehicle as you sit in it
TPMS
Tyre pressure monitoring system — warns if a tyre is under-inflated
AC/Heater
The heating and air-conditioning system
Actuator
A motor or solenoid that moves a mechanical part on command
Anti-Seize
Grease that stops mating parts (like a wheel on a hub) from corroding together
Caliper
The part that squeezes the brake pads onto the disc
Control Module
A control unit for one of the vehicle's systems (engine, gearbox, brakes, body, and so on)
Fault Memory
The list of stored trouble codes in a control module
Hub Spigot
The raised centre of the hub that locates the wheel
Multifunction Control Module
The control module that runs shared electrical functions (lights, wipers, locking, and so on)
Rear Differential Lock
A locker that forces both rear wheels to turn together for extra traction
Receiver/Drier
The air-conditioning filter/dryer that removes moisture from the refrigerant
Re-Program
Update the software on a control module using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool
Steering Angle Sensor
Tells the stability-control system which way the steering wheel is pointing
Alternator
The unit that charges the battery while the engine is running
Auxiliary Drive Belt
The belt that drives the alternator, water pump, steering pump or air-conditioning compressor
Calibration
Setting a sensor or module so its readings match the real world
Oil Seal
A rubber seal that keeps oil in and dirt out, typically around a rotating shaft
