Engine & fuel system
5 documented faults — symptoms, causes and workshop fixes.
Engine stalls
Overview
- Affects
- All models with Diesel engines.
- Remedy
- Clean & lubricate
Symptoms
Poor idle.
Cause
Interference of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal due to build up of debris on CKP sensor.
Repair
- Remove crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- Thoroughly clean CKP sensor and CKP sensor reluctor. Replace component if necessary.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 1.
Noise/vibration from rear of vehicle whilst driving
Cause
Rear exhaust heat shield loose due to defective rivets.
Repair
- Replace existing exhaust heat shield rivets with larger rivets.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 2.
Lack of power
Overview
- Affects
- All models with Diesel engines.
- Remedy
- Fit new part
Symptoms
Engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated. Trouble code stored: P00BD.
Cause
Turbocharger (TC) to intercooler hose split.
Repair
- Fit new turbocharger (TC) to intercooler hose.
- Check mass air flow (MAF) sensor, replace if required.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 3.
Battery discharged
Overview
- Affects
- All models with Diesel engines, →2018.
- Remedy
- Clean & lubricate
Symptoms
Insufficient alternator output.
Cause
Poor connection between engine earth lead and engine.
Repair
- Inspect earth lead and earth point on rear of engine. Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces. Repair/replace component(s) as necessary.
- Check alternator charging rate. Replace if necessary.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 4.
Engine speed will not increase above 2100rpm
Cause

Multifunction display screen blank even though there is sound from the speakers
Overview
- Affects
- All models with multifunction display.
Cause
Multifunction display faulty.
Repair
- Check multifunction display wiring for positive supply and earth connection. Repair as necessary.
- If no fault(s) found: Replace multifunction display.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 6.
Glossary
Technical terms used in this guide.
- MIL
- Malfunction indicator lamp — the engine warning light on the dashboard
- CKP
- Crankshaft position sensor — tells the engine control module where the crankshaft is in its rotation
- MAF
- Mass air flow — a sensor that measures how much air the engine is breathing
- TC
- Turbocharger — the exhaust-driven compressor that boosts engine power
- Crankshaft Position
- Where the crankshaft is in its rotation — used for ignition and injection timing
- Trouble Code
- A standardised fault code stored by a control module, read with a diagnostic tool
- Alternator
- The unit that charges the battery while the engine is running
- Earth
- An electrical ground connection back to the battery or body
- Intercooler Hose
- The pipe that carries pressurised air between the turbocharger, intercooler and engine
Frequently asked questions
What are the common faults with the Mazda BT-50 2.2?
This guide contains six workshop bulletins for the Mazda BT-50 2.2. Of these, five concern the engine and fuel system. Symptoms, causes, repair steps and part numbers are shown where supplied.
Does every Mazda BT-50 2.2 have these faults?
No. These are patterns documented across the model by workshops, not predictions for an individual vehicle. Where a fault applies only to certain vehicles or VIN ranges, that is listed with the fault.
Can I check for Mazda BT-50 2.2 faults myself?
Many of them. The documented symptoms can be seen, heard or felt during a test drive.
