Overview
- Affects
- All models with Diesel particulate filter (DPF).
Cause
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) blocked.
Engine oil contaminated with Diesel fuel.
Repair
- Carry out forced DPF regeneration. Forced DPF regeneration can only be carried out using manufacturer's or equivalent diagnostic equipment.
- Change engine oil and filter.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 2.
Unable to lift engine from engine bay
Cause
Engine bay too narrow for engine to be lifted out.
Repair
- Remove engine and transmission from underneath the vehicle.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 3.

Symptoms
Engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated. Trouble code stored: P0341.
Cause
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor circuit malfunction.
Repair
- Carry out electrical, mechanical and component tests (as applicable) to eliminate any other possible cause(s).
- If no fault(s) found: Fit new camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 6.
Engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated. Trouble code stored: P0154
Cause
Faulty heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Note: This fault is only associated with heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) made by Denso.
Repair
- Fit modified heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 8.

- Remedy
- Fit new part
Cause
Headlamp igniter unit not fitted correctly causing poor connection.
Repair
- Ensure headlamp igniter unit is disconnected from power supply.
- Fit new headlamp bulb and headlamp igniter unit. Turn headlamp igniter unit fully clockwise until it locks into position.
Data: Motorwise Workshop. Bulletin 7.

Glossary
Technical terms used in this guide.
- MIL
- Malfunction indicator lamp — the engine warning light on the dashboard
- ECM
- Engine control module — the electronic unit that manages the engine
- DPF
- Diesel particulate filter — traps soot in the exhaust and burns it off periodically
- Trouble Codes
- Standardised fault codes stored by the engine control module, read with a diagnostic tool
- CMP
- Camshaft position — a sensor that tells the engine control module where the camshaft is
- Control Module
- A control unit for one of the vehicle's systems (engine, gearbox, brakes, body, and so on)
- DPF Regeneration
- The process that burns soot out of the diesel particulate filter, usually on a longer run
- Fault Memory
- The list of stored trouble codes in a control module
- Keyless Entry
- Unlocking the car with a remote or by carrying the key, without turning a barrel
- Limp Home
- A protective mode that limits power so the vehicle can be driven to a workshop
- Trouble Code
- A standardised fault code stored by a control module, read with a diagnostic tool
- Alternator
- The unit that charges the battery while the engine is running
- Auxiliary Drive Belt
- The belt that drives the alternator, water pump, steering pump or air-conditioning compressor
- Initialise
- A workshop procedure that teaches a new module or system its starting values
Frequently asked questions
What are the common faults with the Mazda 6 2.2?
This guide contains eight workshop bulletins for the Mazda 6 2.2. Of these, five concern the engine and fuel system and one the electrical and ignition. Symptoms, causes, repair steps and part numbers are shown where supplied.
Does every Mazda 6 2.2 have these faults?
No. These are patterns documented across the model by workshops, not predictions for an individual vehicle. Where a fault applies only to certain vehicles or VIN ranges, that is listed with the fault.
Can I check for Mazda 6 2.2 faults myself?
Many of them. The documented symptoms can be seen, heard or felt during a test drive.
